SANFORD, N.C. — A person riding an ATV died early Friday morning after colliding with a cruiser driven by a Lee County sheriff's deputy near Sanford.

Authorities said the Lee County Deputy Manuel Torres was conducting a security check on a church around 1 a.m. during routine patrol. When the deputy pulled out of the church onto East Forest Oaks Drive, the vehicle collided with the ATV driven by 31-year-old Shelton Lee McLean, of Sanford, who died.

Officials said McLean's ATV was straddling the center yellow line, and Torres was driving in the correct lane. After the two vehicles collided, the McLean's ATV traveled onto the right shoulder and he was ejected.

McLean died at the scene.

Torres' vehicle struck a ditch before coming to rest. The deputy was taken to Central Carolina Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released.

The North Carolina State Highway patrol is investigating the wreck. Charges are not expected.
