On Monday, the Museum of Life and Science in Durham launched its first online store, featuring items from its Elements Museum Store and offering a convenient option for those looking for unique, local gifts - or who just want to shop from home in their pajamas.

The online shop has a pretty broad selection of items - from stuffed animals and a Tinker Totter robot to stoneware mugs, a botanical resin cuffed bracelet and Life and Science gear. Sections include what's new, gifts, apparel and home, and items that are related to museum exhibits.

To encourage shoppers, the museum is running a special holiday promotion through Dec. 31 that applies for both in-person and online purchases: For each $75 you spend after discounts at Elements Museum Store Online, Gizmo Garage, or Elements Museum Store, you’ll receive a $10 gift card to spend at either of the museum’s in-store locations.

Some things to know about the online shop:

  • Yes, you can buy in-store gift cards online. You can't use the gift cards in the online store, but you can use them at the museum's Elements and Gizmo Garage store, along with the Elements Coffee Bar.
  • Items only can be shipped - to your home or someplace else. But, if you want to pick something up at the museum from the online store, you can call Elements directly and place your order over the phone.
  • You won't find every item in the museum's stores online. So if your child was particularly taken with something on a recent visit, you may need to go back to the museum to get it. The museum will be adding things to the online shop going forward.
Gift cards for general admission and museum memberships are available separately. Gift cards can be purchased either in-person at the museum’s main admission desk or by calling 919-220-5429. The museum's website has more information about memberships. I know a lot of grandparents give museum memberships at Christmas. The new online store is a great option for out-of-town family members, who want to give an annual membership and something kids can unwrap and play with on Christmas morning.
