Atlantic Beach fire chief dies after weekend ski accident

The EMS and fire chief of the Town of Atlantic Beach died Monday after suffered an injury during a weekend ski trip, authorities said.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA — The EMS and fire chief of the Town of Atlantic Beach died Monday after he suffered an injury during a weekend snow ski trip, authorities said.

The town on Monday announced the death of Adam Snyder, 47, shortly after 5 p.m. on social media.

"It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the death of Atlantic Beach Fire Chief Adam Snyder. Chief Snyder succumbed to injuries sustained in a snow skiing accident this afternoon at the University of Virginia Medical Center," the post said.

According to a weekend Facebook post, Snyder was skiing at the Wintergreen Resort in Virginia when the accident occurred.

After the accident, he was rushed to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, where he had been listed in critical condition on Sunday with family members and co-workers by his side.

According to the town, Snyder, was a 20-year member of the Atlantic Beach Fire Department and has served as chief for 15 years. He was also a United States Marine Corps veteran, where he served as a rescue swimmer.

"His remarkable work in Atlantic Beach and with local firefighting academies led him to become one of the most respected Fire Chiefs in North Carolina. On behalf of all Town employees and the citizens of Atlantic Beach we extend our deepest sympathy to the family of Fire Chief Adam Snyder," the town posted on its Facebook page.

Funeral arrangements for Snyder were pending.
