DURHAM, N.C. — Fires were set, windows were broken and more than a dozen businesses were damaged in Durham, including some at the American Tobacco Campus, on Wednesday night as protesters took to the streets in the wake of a Kentucky grand jury's decision in the death of Breonna Taylor.

Several windows were hit and a glass door was broken at the entrance to American Tobacco. Some trash cans were also set on fire, and some protesters threw rocks. A video showed protesters using umbrellas to cover their faces as they broke into buildings.

At least 70 protesters marched in parts of downtown Durham in reaction to the grand jury's decision not to charge any Louisville, Ky., police officers in Taylor's shooting death during a drug raid gone wrong in March.

Taylor, a Black emergency medical worker, was shot multiple times by white officers who entered her home during a narcotics investigation.

The protest began at 7:30 p.m. at CCB Plaza, with protesters marching to the police department then through downtown. When they began throwing things and smashing windows, police stood by, watching to make sure that protesters did not impede the flow of traffic.

Protesters left around 9 p.m. Police officers were out to put out the trash can fires and to patrol the area to make sure traffic was flowing.
