Ashley Christensen's response to rude comment on Instagram goes viral
An Instagram post by Ashley Christensen, a James Beard Award-winning chef and local activist, went viral last week after the Raleigh restaurateur responded to a rude comment on Instagram.
Posted — UpdatedOn Thursday, Christensen posted a photo of herself and Michelle Obama, wishing her self-stated hero, "Happy Birthday. Your presence and leadership continue to give me (and so many others) #hope and #drive to make tomorrow better than today." The post was receiving positive attention until another Instagram user commented, "Just cook and be quiet."
She is also known for her focus on community service, fair working conditions for those in the service industry and sustainable food sourcing along with her participation in various human rights and political movements.
So of course the chef was insulted by a comment that, in her book, implied restaurant workers were simply there to feed people. Following Thursday's post, Christensen took a screen shot of her interaction with the commenter, and posted a second photo to Instagram addressing her feelings about his response in a lengthy reply.
“You cannot be a food connoisseur while insulting those who cook for a living, but telling them their voice doesn’t matter,” Christensen wrote. “I also hope that you realize that you chose to follow me personally and that you felt entitled to suggest that because I am a chef I should not wish one of my heroes happy birthday in the presence of my platform of personal followers.”
The post received over 650 supportive comments and 4,000 likes from Christensen's fans.
