DURHAM, N.C. — Monday marks almost 20 days since a gas explosion sparked a massive fire that engulfed a downtown Durham building.

An art event planned at Durham School of the Arts, which is located across the street from the site of the blast, aims to help students, staff and the Durham community cope with emotional trauma left from the April 10 accident.

The organization leading the creative workshop is called Bump the Triangle. Bump, which uses music to help children, is also based in the Brightleaf District close to where the explosion happened.

Joy Harrell, the program director, said she wants to collaborate with the students, knowing that doing so can have long lasting impacts.

"There are community leaders in each of those sessions that are going to be there to help kids participate and make it engaging," Harrell said. "And there are also going to be people there, if students just want to talk."

The program, which will be held at Duke Memorial Church on W. Chapel Street at 5 p.m., will engage students in artwork, music performances and spoken word.
