RALEIGH, N.C. — The N.C. Museum of Art is gearing up for this weekend's opening of a new outdoor exhibit where visitors can scramble on top of a partially submerged rooftop sculpture.

"Southern Oracle: We Will Tear the Roof Off," a temporary, interactive piece by artist Heather Hart, features just the roofline peeking out of the ground, according to a news release. It is inspired by her family history in North Carolina and the album Mothership Connection by Parliament-Funkadelic, the project of renowned singer, songwriter, producer, and North Carolina native George Clinton.

As I wrote several weeks ago, here's the part where kids will take notice: Visitors can climb on top of the work and venture inside. They also can pipe music into the structure through their iPhones. The piece will extend about 28 feet by 36 feet, the museum tells me.

On Wednesday, students from St. Augustine University will be at the museum to paint the house with guidance from Hart, the artist.

And, on Saturday, the structure will officially open during a free family event—a Star Wars-themed Hoopla Hyperspace Party in the Park from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Saturday, May 4, at the museum's Museum Park.

Here's a description of all of the event, courtesy of the museum's website: "Celebrate the opening of our Museum Park season, new art installations including Heather Hart's Southern Oracle: We Will Tear the Roof Off, and Star Wars Day all in one big outdoor party. Through 8:30 p.m., enjoy art making, laser tag, Jedi training, game truck, music, food and drinks, and more. Stargazing with Raleigh Astronomy Club starts at 8:30 pm. Costumes encouraged; fun for all ages."

Several food trucks will be on hand for the event. The event is free, but tickets are required. You can get your tickets on the museum's website.
