Arrest made in hit-and-run incident in Chapel Hill
WRAL's Adam Owens has more on the hit-and-run incident that happened in Chapel Hill. A suspect has been arrested and the State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to look into the incident further.
3400 SINCE THE PANDEMIC REACHED NORTH CAROLINA. 914 PEOPLE ARE HOSPITALIZED. >>> THE FBI IS INVESTIGATING A HIT AND RUN THAT LED TO MULTIPLE OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTINGS. AUTHORITIES SAY IT STARTED LAST NIGHT WITH A HIT AND RUN CALL AT A UNC OFFICER FIRING HIS GUN LATER. IT ENDED IN ANOTHER COUNTY WITH MORE SHOTS FIRED FROM LAW OFFICERS. WRAL'S ADAM OWENS WALKS US THROUGH IT. >> Reporter: UNC POLICE WERE CALLED TO A HIT AND RUN HERE AT SOUTH COLUMBIA AND MCCALLIE STREETS. BENJAMIN MORLEY STOPPED ON NORTH COLUMBIA STREET BEHIND A FIRE DEPARTMENT VEHICLE WORKING AN UNRELATED GAS LEAK. WHEN HE WAS ORDERED FROM HIS CAR, INVESTIGATORS SAID HE WOULD NOT GET OUT, HAD A MACHETE IN HIS HAND AND CRASHED INTO THE FIRE DEPARTMENT VEHICLE. WHEN THE VEHICLE STARTED MOVING TOWARD THE OFFICER, THE OFFICER RESPONDED BY FIRING HIS GUN. THEY SAY MORLEY DROVE AWAY. BUT IT DID NOT END HERE. DEPUTIES SAID THEY CAME ACROSS THE SUSPECT IN THE TOWN OF GRAHAM A LITTLE MORE THAN 20 MILES FROM HERE. THEY SAY WHEN THEY APPROACHED THE SUSPECT'S VEHICLE, HE LUNGED AT THEM WITH A MACHETE. TWO DEPUTIES FIRED THEIR WEAPONS. DEPUTIES REMOVED HIM FROM THE VEHICLE AND HE HAD A GRAZE WOUND ON HIS LEG. HE WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL TO BE TREATED. FOLLOWING PROTOCOL, THE SBI IS NOW INVESTIGATING.
