ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A Whitakers man has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run in Rocky Mount last month, police said Friday.

Bruno Former, 53, was charged Wednesday with felony hit-and-run and released on a $25,000 unsecured bond.

Matthew Pender, 27, was hit by a passing vehicle in the 1500 block of North Wesleyan Boulevard in Rocky Mount on April 11.

Video from security cameras in the area showed a Smart car traveling in the area the night of the crash, and headlight fragments recovered at the scene came from a white or silver 2007-2016 Smart Fortwo, police said.

An investigation led officers to Former's residence, where they found a Smart Fortwo behind the home, police said.
