FORT BRAGG, N.C. — It's been an ongoing issue at Fort Bragg for years: Old barracks with mold and asbestos.

The latest bout has forced military leaders to move about 1,200 soldiers into new housing.

For the first time, WRAL News had a chance to go inside the barracks with all the problems.

There are about a dozen barracks on Smoke Bomb HIll that are going to be demolished. Inside, they look like college dorms with miniature refrigerators and microwave ovens.

Some soldiers have complained about mold and asbestos. Others say the air conditioning always had problems.

PFC Austin Robertson, one of the soldiers being relocated, says the new barracks are a big step up.

"I went in there yesterday," he said. "Five stars."

Some soldiers have been given allowances to help them find apartments and homes off post.

So far, military leaders have found new homes for about 325 soldiers – meaning there are still around 800 more soldiers who have to be moved.

Military leaders hope to have all of the soldiers out of the old barracks by the end of this month.
