Sgt. Carlos E. Gill, 25, died Tuesday at Walter Reed Army Medical Center of an illness. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Wash.

Gill was serving in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom before his illness.

According to the Sampson County Sheriff's Office, a school resource officer discovered the body of a man inside a vehicle at Hobbton High School's athletic field. Authorities believe the man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
