Are your kids all about The Floss? (And not the dental kind)

The Floss entered my life on an almost daily basis around Spring Break.

As we took a long road trip up to see my dad in New York, my eight-year-old perfected her flossing moves. I have video of her flossing at Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, at Niagara Falls and at Women's Rights National Historic Park in Seneca Falls, N.Y. It became just a thing she did as we waited in line at the grocery store or, really, at any random moment.

And it wasn't anything that I thought much about until I saw her actually teaching other kids how to do it at the pool in the last couple of weeks. Apparently she's now considered a flossing expert among her peers. #proud

Sadly ... this has nothing to do with her teeth. But it has everything to do with a dance craze that lit up the YouTubes and has been trickling down to kids of all ages. It's been dubbed the new dab and compared to the freak out over fidget spinners not that long ago.

The basics of The Floss: With straight arms and your hands in two fists, move your hips one way and then swing your arms in the opposite direction. Start slowly, then move faster and faster.

I've tried it more than a few times and, to my eight-year-old's utter embarrassment, I'm absolutely horrible at it. She is #notproud.

A little history of The Floss

We can thank teen Instagrammer The Backpack Kid, who was named Russell Horning by his parents, for this latest sensation. His Instagram posts featuring The Floss pulled in all kinds of likes and attention and eventually netted him an appearance on Saturday Night Live back in May 2017 as Katy Perry performed her song "Swish Swish."

It's been a thing ever since. And while I know plenty of parents have been watching their kids perfect their flossing in recent months, I've been surprised to see how many are just learning about it now.

Ready to impress your kids with your flossing prowess? Even the how-to flossing videos have gone viral.
