Edgecombe bus driver didn't follow protocol

A school bus driver in Edgecombe County won't be behind the wheel for a few days after an elementary school student was left on a bus, said Diane LeFiles, a spokeswoman for the district.

LeFiles said a child from Stocks Elementary in Tarboro was left on the bus when the driver got off the bus at the school. An assistant principal found the child a short time later.

Edgecombe school system's policy requires bus drivers to walk through the bus to be sure no students are left behind, LeFiles said.

The driver will be suspended from driving while an investigation is completed.
