Controversial author makes stop in Chapel Hill

Dambisa Moyo, writer of “Dead Aid: Why Aid Is Not Working And How There Is A Better Way For Africa,” gave a lecture Wednesday at The Friday Center in Chapel Hill.

The New York Times best-selling author writes in the book that government aid to Africa has done more harm than good.

Moyo, who is from Zambia, said the money has caused dependency, corruption and market distortion. She said Africa should try to stand on its own.

“We would love to see Africa, and African countries, and Africans as equal partners on the global stage,” Moyo said. “We don't want to live in a society where it is us and them, donor and recipient, and Africa continues to be viewed very much as a drag on the global economy.”

More than 700 people came to hear Moyo speak.  The lecture was part of a series sponsored by the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise.
