An acquaintance recognized Roderick Lee Baldwin and turned him in to authorities Tuesday, four days after he escaped from a work release program at a Chapel Hill bagel shop.

Baldwin, 45, was working at Bagels on the Hill, at 630 Weaver Dairy Road, Friday when he stole $330 and drove away from the restaurant in a box truck, police said.

Keith Acree, a spokesman for the North Carolina Department of Correction, said the truck was found Monday at a truck stop near the Orange and Alamance county line.

The Division of Prisons’ Fugitive Squad picked Baldwin up at 3:12 p.m. Tuesday at a Durham apartment complex and returned him to Orange Correctional Center.

Baldwin had worked 20 to 30 hours a week at the bagel shop since March 2009.

He was serving a maximum 15-year sentence with an expected release date was June 4, 2011, before his escape.
