Scotland Neck man charged in beating

Sheriff's deputies on Thursday arrested a Scotland Neck man charged with seriously beating another man.

Sherrod Whitaker, 19, faces one charge of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. He was being held in the Halifax County Jail under a $75,000 bond and has a first court date of April 1.

Deputies said that Whitaker got into an altercation with the victim early one night. Whitaker left the scene but returned with a weapon and badly beat the victim, investigators said.

The victim, whose name has not been released, suffered seriously but non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials have not said what weapon was used in the attack.
