Dunn man hit, killed by train

A Dunn man died Wednesday after being hit by a six-car Amtrak passenger train in Harnett County around 4 p.m.

The train was heading south near the intersection of U.S. Highway 301 and Hodges Chapel Road when the engineers saw a man standing on the tracks, according to sheriff's officials.

The engineers sounded the horn and applied the emergency brakes but were unable to stop before hitting Timothy Keith Rafferty Jr., 31.

No one on the train was injured. After the investigation, the train continued on to its destination, which sheriff's officials said they didn't know.
