Raleigh noise rules could change how you experience nightlife in downtown

The Raleigh City Council on Tuesday is expected to discuss a proposed noise ordinance that would regulate sound levels in downtown and businesses throughout the city.

The city council is holding a second reading of the proposal at 1 p.m. The ordinance would set a decibel limit based on location, time and day of the week.

Glenwood South, a stretch of downtown with an active bar scene, would be able to play music louder for longer than other businesses, according to the ordinance. Other businesses would have to follow stricter sound regulations unless given a permit.

The Raleigh Police Department proposed staff to enforce the ordinance.

Businesses who receive a noise violation three times could face a $1,500 civil penalty. For a fourth violation, they would not be able to have sound equipment outside for 18 months.

The city proposed the new ordinance in early October. Business owners and neighbors voiced concern or approval for the proposal in a public hearing last week.

If the council moves to adopt the ordinance, it could go into effect as early as Tuesday afternoon.
