Poll: Most in NC oppose shutting down US Department of Education

President Donald Trump has long expressed a desire to dismantle the federal agency that distributes public education dollars to schools across the nation. The idea is opposed by 63% of voters, while 30% of voters support it.

breezy Thursday evening in Washington where the president says he

wants to shut down the US Department of Education

A new poll finds most North Carolinians are not on

board with that idea

The Meredith poll surveyed about 700 North Carolinians and found

that overall 63% opposed the idea of shutting down the

Department of Education

The agency sets regulations for K-12 schools that provides some

funding and it administers billions of dollars in grants for

colleges

The idea of closing the agency didn't reach 50% support

from either party

78% of Democrats opposed the idea

On the Republican side

47% supported it while about 41% opposed it

Meanwhile 68% of unaffiliated voters also opposed the idea

It was unpopular across the board with only the most

conservative voters and the oldest voters saying they're open to

shutting down the agency

Poll director David McLennan told us the idea seems popular

mostly among a small subset of Trump supporters

This is one of those policy positions that doesn't seem

to be a winner for Trump in the same way

as some of his economic plans but yet you know

for his base the very strong very conservative um self-identified

voters in North Carolina they like it

North Carolinians weighed in on a range of issues from

legalizing more casinos to whether the US should buy Greenland
