The Wake County Animal Center is kicking off the new year with its "New Year, New Pet!" adoption campaign.
The shelter is offering special adoption fees until Jan. 17 to help you find your new best friend. Dogs and cats who have been at the shelter for more than two weeks can be adopted for free. For those who have been there less than two weeks, adoption fees are only $25 for dogs and $5 for cats.

"This year, consider a resolution that will have a real impact: adopting a pet," said Wake County Commissioner Vickie Adamson. "A new furry friend can help you stick to your goals by keeping you active with daily walks, reducing stress with their unconditional love and spreading joy through their companionship."
The new year has just begun, but the Wake County Animal Center is already at capacity. Currently, 97 dogs and 14 cats are waiting at the shelter for their forever homes. Another 28 dogs and 16 cats are in foster care and available for adoption.
The shelter has housed 11 dogs for more than 90 days, 12 dogs for more than 60 days and 13 dogs for more than 30 days. Kino, an American Staffordshire Terrier, has stayed the longest at 232 days.
Long stays like this stress the pets and leave them feeling lonely while they wait for a loving home.
The adoption process is simple, and the shelter’s team is ready to help you find the perfect match. Whether you’re looking for an energetic dog to keep you moving or a laid-back cat to curl up with, the Wake County Animal Center has the perfect companion for you.
Staff share lots of information about each pet’s unique personality and work to match pets with potential adopters. Adult pets are a great choice because their personalities are already set, making it easier to see how they'll fit into your family or lifestyle. Before going to their new homes, all pets receive spay or neuter surgery, microchipping and required vaccinations.
