You can make the season a cozier with a virtual fireplace. NASA has you covered with something a little different. The roar of four RS-25 engines (generating 512,000 pounds of thrust each) along side a pair of solid rocket boosters (adding another 3.6 million pounds of thrust each) on the business end of the Space Launch System (SLS) joins the crackle of the burning logs.

This fun stream is just a scaled down version of what NASA has been doing for over 50 years.

SLS and SpaceX rockets launch from historic Launch Complex 39. Each launch pad is built around a flame trench which channels the flame, heat, and noise away from the rising rocket. About 96,000 bricks line this four story high, 450 foot wide fireplace designed to withstand temperatures of up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.  

The bricks were replaced in a year long project in 2017 to expand the capabilities of the launch pads from supporting a single launch vehicle like the Space Shuttle or Saturn V to accommodate a variety of launch vehicles from NASA.SpaceX and others.

SLS is scheduled to deliver four astronauts including North Carolina's own Christina Koch on a 10-day test flight around the moon aboard an Orion spacecraft in September 2025.
