An Outer Banks home collapsed Tuesday into the Atlantic Ocean.

On Tuesday afternoon, the property fell at 23039 G.A. Kohler Court in Rodanthe.

It marks the third home along G.A. Kohler Court to collapse in the last week and the 10th G.A. Kohler Court home lost to the waves in a four-year period, according to officials. Also, it marks the fifth collapse in 2024.

On Monday, Cape Hatteras National Seashore announced that the owners of a third home, 23039 G.A. Kohler Court, had hired a contractor to remove it, but continued elevated tides and other factors had delayed that work.

On Friday, there were two homes along the same street that collapsed:

  • After days of high surf driven by king tides and a coastal low, the home at 23001 G.A. Kohler Court collapsed on the morning of Friday, Sept. 20, 2024.
    • The home at 23009 G.A. Kohler Court fell after 9:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20. Debris from the home at 23001 G.A. Kohler Court had washed into and damaged the second home that fell on the same day.

      Property owners, contractors, Outer Banks visitors and seashore employees all pitched in to clean up debris that spanned more than 20 miles of beach south from the site of the homes' collapse. Through Monday, more than 24 pickup truck loads of debris had been removed.

      Visitors were asked to stay out of the water and use caution when walking on the beach from Rodanthe south because of the risk from building materials, exposed septic systems, wires and broken concrete on the beach.

      Oceanfront homes at the Outer Banks have been at risk of collapse for years, particularly in Rodanthe, due to erosion.

      One oceanfront homeowner in town told WRAL News "There was a football field of beach behind these houses" when they bought their house more than a decade ago.

      Multiple other houses along the Outer Banks have fallen into the ocean since 2020.
