A North Carolina man was arrested and charged on Monday for his role in the Jan. 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol

According to the U.S. Justice Department, 44-year-old Paul Marvin Nowell of Wendell is charged with felony obstruction of law enforcement and three misdemeanor offenses, including entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly conduct inside a restricted building or grounds and disorderly conduct in a Capitol building or grounds.

According to documents, Nowell attended the "Stop the Steal" rally in Washington , D.C. on Jan. 6, 2021 and later climbed up the west terrace and walked up the steps.

Police told Nowell to move back and leave the building on multiple occasions, but he refused, and at one point told the officers, "You're not real Americans."

At approximately 4:54 p.m., authorities said Norwell began pushing back against an officer's shield as the line of police officers attempted to clear the northwest steps.

Nowell eventually cleared the Capitol building around 5:05 p.m.

Agents with the FBI arrested Nowell on Wednesday.

In the 42 months since Jan. 6, 2021, more than 1,470 people have been charged across all 50 states for crimes related to the Capitol riots, and more than 530 people were charged with assaulting police or impeding law enforcement.

Authorities said the investigation remains onoging.
