A retired Durham County judge, Leon Stanback, died Saturday.

Stanback was a Superior Court Judge for the 14th Judicial District of the Third Division of Durham County Superior Court, and he temporarily served as the Durham County District Attorney.

"His contributions to our local community are legendary," said Durham County Sheriff Clarence Birkhead. "His love and dedication to our community will always be remembered. 

"My personal interactions with Judge Stanback provided me with multiple examples of what public service and leadership require of all of us; integrity, compassion, and humility."

Stanback got his undergraduate degree and went to law school at North Carolina Central University.
