Lines were long at two Raleigh-area DMVs this morning, as Saturday walk-in hours were offered at DMVs across the state, including two in Wake County.

The extended hours are being added for the summer as a mounting backlog has caused delays in people receiving physical driver licenses in North Carolina. Earlier this week, DMV Commissioner Wayne Goodwin, who underwent a grilling by Senate lawmakers in February, testified before the House Oversight and Reform Committee. He updated lawmakers on wait times, unfilled positions, efforts to protect customers from identity fraud and customer service amid lengthy delays for new licenses.

A typical 15-day turnaround to receive IDs in the mail has jumped to roughly six weeks, said the DMV last month. At the time, there were about 50,000 per week added to the backlog across the state, according to the state DMV.

Saturday's DMV services include:

  • Driver license or ID cards
    • Renewals or duplicate orders
      • Address changes
        • REAL ID issuances
          • Road tests for customers that have already completed the knowledge and written tests

            “I continue to be focused on offering more opportunities for customers to receive services both online and during expanded hours,” said Commissioner Wayne Goodwin. “Opening for Saturday hours at many of our busiest locations statewide is what customers want, need, and have requested.”

            Scott Jordan, who arrived around 6:40 a.m., said the line was long enough to reach the end of the building at the Avent Ferry DMV office. However, he says they moved quickly and efficiently.

            "They've moved a lot of us through really quick," said Jordan. "By 9 a.m., the person I brought had taken their road test."

            He said the DMV had two workers moving through the line to ensure everyone waiting had all the paperwork they needed, so no one wasted their time.

            "It was very well orchestrated," he said.

            Anyone considering a visit to the DMV should first check to determine if they can complete their business online. NCDMV offers many online services, including driver license and ID card renewals, ordering duplicate licenses and ID cards, address changes and voter registration applications.

            The following DMV offices are offering extended Saturday walk-in hours from June 8 until August 24 from 8 a.m. until noon, with no appointment necessary:
