Update on efforts to decrease crime in downtown Raleigh expected today

Raleigh leaders have been working to improve safety and decrease crime in downtown Raleigh – and at a meeting on Tuesday morning, we're expected to get an update on those efforts.

About six months ago, data showed an increase in crime in parts of downtown.

WRAL DataTrackers dug into crime trends last year, tracking crime between the Warehouse District and Moore Square in downtown.

Between January and August, Raleigh Police reported 216 assaults in that area alone.

Since then, the city has upped security by hiring private security teams to patrol every day from 4 a.m. until midnight.

Tuesday's meeting will provide an update on recent efforts to prevent crime in downtown, and what level of impact they've had.

The Safe, Vibrant and Healthy Community committee will also talk about new strategies and ways to prevent crime.

Tuesday's meeting is scheduled for this morning at 11:30 a.m.
