'Really scary:' Students on edge after two sexual assaults reported at NC State

Police at NC State are working to learn more about a second reported sexual assault on campus in a matter of days.

On Sunday night, students received a WolfAlert about a sexual assault and battery in Owen Hall. Then, again on Monday night around 10:30 p.m., students received another alert about a second sexual assault on campus, this time in Lee Hall.

Campus police were reviewing security camera video and students are on edge.

"Me and my friends, we’ve been having kind of, like, a buddy system with the bathroom," said Owen Hall resident and first-year student Krista Chasse.

Police said they heard from a student who was not the victim that two men of unknown race committed the sexual assault in Owen Hall, where many of the residents are first-year students.

University police said they did not have enough information to determine whether the alleged assailants are N.C. State students. By Monday, no specific suspect had been identified and no one was in custody in connection with the crime. Police asked that anyone with information call 919-515-3000.

NC State students taking precautions, asking for more safety information

"I feel like they should just give out more information, because ... there wasn’t much given so you don’t know what to look out for," said Chasse.

Chasse and other students who spoke to WRAL News on Monday said they know the risks of living on campus and take appropriate precautions.

"I don’t go out at night by myself," sophomore Sophie Jones said.

A classmate, Lauren Doggett, said, "At night, I almost always try to not be alone, first of all. I make sure I have a friend. And I have pepper spray, and if I’m walking at night I make sure I have it on my hand."

Both sophomores expressed concern for the first-year students just getting used to campus life.

"It can be really scary, especially when you’re living on your own for the first time," Doggett said.

Clark added, "It makes me sad that they’ve only been here for like a week, because we’re on our second week of school."

While the subjects of the sexual battery in Owen Hall are still unknown, police say the victim and suspect of the sexual assault in Lee Hall were both students, who met through a dating app. They say they know who the suspect is, but he has not yet been taken into custody.

The news of these sexual assaults on campus comes several days after a man was charged with indecent exposure after a woman told police he exposed himself to her inside DH Hill Library.
