You may have read about a "rare" "Titanic sized" asteroid that "NASA just revealed" is "hurtling toward Earth" this weekend.

Asteroid 467336 (2002 LT 38) was discovered back in 2002 by the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) a NASA/US Air Force/MIT collaboration. NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) has been monitoring and reporting on it ever since. So this isn't something that NASA or anyone else "just revealed."

2002 LT 38 will be at its closest around 4 a.m. Sunday morning safely more than 4 million miles away. Also remember that space is three demensional as well.  The asteroid is traveling through space from beneath the plane of Earth's orbit around the Sun and was 7.7 million miles away when it crossed that plane.

16,000 miles per hour sounds fast, but even bigger 2019 XB3 passed by Earth at over 81,000 mph back on June 10.  Now that's hurtling!

Titanic sized is one way to describe it, but in reality this object so far away, we're not really that sure about its size. CNEOS data puts 2002 LT38 between 200 and 450 meters or between about the height of the PNC Plaza building in Raleigh and the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) in Chicago, quite a difference.

A skyscraper sized object like this may sound big, but 2020 DB5 is about twice as big passed even closer last Thursday.

This event is also hardly rare.

An average of two asteroids or other Near Earth Objects (NEOs) make close passes by Earth each day, about once per month for NEOs as big or bigger than 2002 LT38. Each is usually milllions of miles from Earth and poses no threat.
