The North Carolina State Lottery Commission, which will oversee newly legalized betting on horse races and other sports as soon as next January, on Friday launched a web site to help citizens track the planning process and understand what's to come.
The site, at https://nclottery.com/sport-betting, includes answers to frequently asked questions like when and where bets can be placed and by whom.

It also describes how proceeds from the 18 percent tax on any sports betting revenues will be distributed in the state, including to support youth and college sports.
The law, signed this week by Gov. Roy Cooper, allows for 12 licenses for mobile sports wagering operators. It also allows for eight sports venues to have in-person sports books. Applications for those licenses are not yet available, but venues like PNC Arena in Raleigh and Bank of America Stadium, home of the Carolina Panthers, are expected to vie for the right to host betting operations.
