'She didn't deserve this' says mother of 14-year-old girl shot in Durham

A mother is speaking out and asking for justice after her 14-year-old daughter was shot on April 8, just before 2 a.m. in Durham.

Natima Taylor believes her daughter was ambushed after being taken to McDougald Terrace, where she was shot by people her daughter THOUGHT were friends.

"My daughter is only 14, and she had never been in that area before," said Taylor. "She did not know anyone over there."

Living in a parent's worst nightmare, Taylor has been at the hospital by her daughter's side every day for nearly two weeks since the shooting.

"I have been here for two weeks," said Taylor. "My daughter was hanging out with "so-called friends" who led her to somewhere she knew nothing about. She was shot twice, once in the stomach and once in the hand."

Taylor wants other parents to be aware of who their kids are hanging out with and says she believes her daughter was set up.

"Watch who your kids are hanging with because some friends ain't good friends," said Taylor.

Taylor describes the moment before the shooting took place.

She says the individuals involved asked her daughter if she had anything on her, and the daughter told them she did not. That's when they walked up to the teen, shot her, and placed her in a headlock.

Since that night, the teenager has been in the hospital fighting for her life. Fortunately, she is no longer on a ventilator and is expected to recover.

Taylor expresses that she is grateful that her child is still alive but asks those involved to come forward.

"If you have any information, please just come forward. I am begging you. She did not deserve this." says Taylor.

Police continue to investigate and no arrests have been made.

The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for hospital expenses.
