Wake County students head back to school after 6 code red lockdowns last week

Students are heading back to class Monday morning, following a series of threats that forced lockdowns at six schools in Wake County last week.

On Friday we spoke to parents of Zebulon Middle School students who were concerned, frustrated and desperate for answers.

They say the threats made toward local schools have simply gotten out of hand — and school leaders agree.

They're attempting to find solutions to put an end to this trend.

On Friday, these six schools in Wake County were the target of multiple threats. Two experienced a code red lockdown, which prompted early dismissals and chaos for many.

Zebulon Middle School was one of the schools that had a code red lockdown Friday. They've increased security Monday morning, with a few cruisers from the police department and Wake County Sheriff's Office parked outside. An officer said they were asked to return Monday after Friday’s incident, but not because of any new reported threats.

Investigators are now looking into the source of the threats. The question is who is making the them — and why?

Wake County’s board chair and superintendent said they are looking at ways to work with law enforcement agencies to devise better safety measures. They also said they're working with state lawmakers to try and strengthen laws that address perpetrators.

Parents have been asked to secure their firearms and have a serious talk with their children.

The Wake County Sheriff’s Office is also encouraging parents to monitor their children's social media activity. The Board of Education is set to address school safety and security at its meeting Tuesday.
