it's amazing

As soon as we said you can have a plot

People wanted something

The project that we got this wonderful AARP grant for

is to build a community garden

This is a wonderful place where many people are going

to be able to connect with the environment that sustains

them and we wanted to provide a space on city

owned land where people could have a plot and they

could grow vegetables or flowers

These are individual plots and you rent them for a

very nominal fee depending on the size of the plot

If you have a five ft long plot it's $5

a year

We've been working with this idea for about two years

but to be honest we didn't have the money in

our city budget

You know we just didn't have the tax dollars and

that's what I'm so excited about partnering with AARP

We're so excited to support the city of brevard As

they work to make these immediate improvements already like so

Our community is actually one of the oldest in the

states in terms of median age Transylvania County I think

the median age is 50 something in the county

Now we've situated the garden in in an area where

we have a large population of people who are living

in apartments and really need this type of outdoor recreation

that you know it's something they can enjoy that isn't

too strenuous but still gives you that benefit of really

being out in nature and working with your hands and

growing your own food or your own vegetables I've very

much enjoyed having the five garden beds here

And the plants have been growing really well

I'm really pleased with everything that's going on here

I'm really looking at this not just as a garden

but also as a community space where people can interact

and make that connection

Healthy community means healthy businesses and going green is a

wonderful way to keep the community connected and happy and

healthy

It means so much to have the grant that helps

fund this

Um having this garden in my community is really amazing

It helps bring so many people together and it really

creates a unique place in our community

What we've created is we've created a community space that

not only builds a garden but it builds community itself

and it builds that connection on behalf of all of

the groups and the partners that are here
