Stolen firearm found in student's bookbag at Sanford school

A stolen firearm was found in a student's bookbag Wednesday at Central Carolina Academy, according to the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded to the school and took the student into custody. It was later determined that the firearm was stolen from Harnett County.

Juvenile petitions were filed for possession of a weapon on school campus, possession of stolen property, carrying a concealed weapon and communicating threats.

Central Carolina Academy is a charter school in Sanford for grades 6-12.

An investigation is ongoing.
