Gunfight in Henderson injures two people, shooter on the run

Two people were injured in an exchange of gunfire Friday afternoon in Henderson, Mayor Eddie Ellington said.

The shots were fired around 3 p.m. Friday outside the former Hayes Brothers Muffler Shop at the corner of S. Garnett and Granite streets, according to the Henderson Police Department.

One person was hit in the stomach and was taken to a hospital. Henderson police said they believe the shooter targeted this person.

A woman sitting in a car was hit in the leg when a bullet came into the vehicle. Authorities took the woman to a local medical facility, police said.

Another round broke the window of a nearby post office. The windows were boarded up after bullets busted them.

No suspects were in custody by 9 p.m. Friday, police said. The mayor did not say whether or how the two victims were related to those who fired the shots.

"I was actually coming from Franklin County, and I started getting calls left and right ‘Don’t go. Don’t go home,'" Vance County resident Kandis Faith said.

Faith was close to the crime scene, which Sky 5 flew over.

"We regret this unfortunate [thing] that happened," Ellington said. "You can’t be too careful about it."
