Two crashes, each involving multiple vehicles, slowed travel on Interstate 40 in Durham on Tuesday afternoon.

The first closed lanes in both directions near the Interstate 540 interchange just before 2 p.m.

Sky 5 flew over the scene, which showed traffic backed up for miles.

Just after 4, as rush hour traffic built, a crash near Barbee Road closed eastbound lanes.

Both crashes will be investigated by the state Highway Patrol, and details on drivers, cause and injuries were not immediately available.

In downtown Durham, North Duke Street was closed at Chapel Hill Street through the afternoon after a freight train hit and killed a person. Security video from the scene shows that the person walked around the crossing arm and stood in front of the train as it approached.
