Family's earring find adds twist to case of woman missing from Virginia

The family of 25-year-old Alyssa Taylor, of Oak Hill, Va., has consistently argued that they believe she was riding in a tractor-trailer that crashed and burst into flames on Interstate 85 in Hillsborough last month.

Investigators say the driver, Daniel McNeal of Exmore, Va., and his dog were killed in the crash, but that they found no evidence that anyone else was in the truck.

The story took a twist this week, when the family posted on Facebook Live that they found one of Taylor's earrings in a storm drain at the crash site.

Sgt. Chris Knox with the North Carolina Highway Patrol said initial findings determined that Taylor wasn't in the crash. However, he says the investigation isn't over. The Highway Patrol continues to work with the SBI lab analyzing evidence from the scene.

They're also cooperating with Virginia authorities on the missing person case.

Taylor's family members want the FBI to get involved in the case.

Taylor was reported missing to the Accomack County (Va.) Sheriff's Office on Sept. 20. Her family told deputies they last heard from her on Sept. 13, when she told her mother that she would be traveling with McNeal.
