NC Senate passes 'Weston's Law' to address elevator safety in rental homes

The North Carolina Senate on Tuesday approved safety changes to short-term rental properties in the state following a little boy's death.

Last year, Weston Androw, 7, was crushed between the inner and outer doors of a beach home's elevator in Corolla.

The new law, named after Weston, will require those short-term rental homes to install a space guard to keep children from getting trapped. The law will also require annual inspections. Right now, inspections are only required in commercial properties.

The state House must still pass a minor tweak to the bill's language before it heads to Gov. Roy Cooper's desk.
