With the full return of spectators for live events at PNC Arena, officials say it’s time for a facelift. The governing board over the 23-year-old venue voted unanimously on Thursday to go ahead with an upgrade -- a timely conversation, considering the Stanley Cup Playoffs are underway.
These upgrades focused on renovating the arena itself, and developing the area around it.

For more than 20 years, PNC Arena has been the one-stop shop for concerts, sporting events and rodeos.
Spectators approve of the venue. Officials. however, are envisioning a modern upgrade.
"It needs an adrenaline shot. It needs to be upgraded to where arenas are today versus where they were in the late 90's," says Jeff Merritt, executive director of Centennial Authority, the governing body that owns PNC.
The enhancement plans were initially put on hold due to the pandemic.
Improvements will focus on the fan experience, and giving them a 'Taste of North Carolina," as well as building facility upgrades.
"Figuring out ways to add space for more food and beverage consumption. We've got a great market here for culinary experiences and and by breweries and distilleries," says Merritt.
Merritt says they'll angle to bring more light into the building, opening up some areas that are currently walled in with a cinderblock wall or staircase.
‘Canes fans like Kenlee Fischer are making the most of PNC in its current state, while waiting to witness its transformation.
"I think the arena itself is really pretty," she says. "I like the look of it."
This would be funded by a interlocal agreement, using funds from hotel/food/beverage taxes.
Renovations were priced at $200 million back in 2019, but are likely higher now due to inflation.
Officials tell WRAL News that it'll be 2025 at the earliest before seeing things get off the ground.
