In Rocky Mount, a child turns 2 while QVC, ATF double reward for information into the fire that killed his father

On Friday, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and QVC doubled the amount of a reward being offered for information about the fire that destroyed the Rocky Mount QVC plant.

After the ATF announced a reward of up to $10,000 for information, QVC said it would match the funds, for a total of $20,000.

The factory burned down on Dec. 18 leaving thousands of employees jobless and killing 21-year-old Kevon Ricks, a worker who was found in the wreckage days later.

The reward announcement only added to the pain for Ricks' family, who were marking his son's second birthday on Friday.

"I don’t have any feelings. I’m numb," said Geneka Ricks.

Instead of celebrating, the family is faced with the possibility that the fire that killed Kevon Ricks was intentional.

"I’m just getting calls and messages about this, and to be honest with you, I don’t want to relive this over no more than what I’m already dealing with," said Geneka Ricks. "Today is my grandson’s birthday, his only son. So I’m not up for it to be honest with you."

Four days after the fire, investigators told WRAL News they were looking into whether the factory was intentionally burned down.

Corey Ray with ATF said the new reward doesn't necessarily mean they've made a decision to consider the fire an arson.

"We haven’t," said Ray. "Lot of interviews going on, we’re still looking for a lot of information from the community to see if we can make a determination one way or another."

“Given the devastating impact this fire had on the community, it is imperative that we get to the right conclusion as soon as we can,” said ATF Special Agent in Charge Vince Pallozzi. "Should that information point to criminal activity, the individual who provided that assistance could receive a very substantial reward if an arrest and conviction occurs.”

Firefighters and emergency crews from six counties responded to the fire at 100 QVC Blvd., near U.S. Highway 64. Officials said approximately 75% of the 1.5 million square-foot facility was damaged in the fire.

“This fire has caused significant impact to the Rocky Mount community. If anyone has information, whether big or small, please relinquish it to authorities so we can bring closure to the family of Mr. Kevon Ricks and the others affected,” said Edgecombe County Sheriff Clee Atkinson.

After QVC officials said that everyone inside the center made it out of the building, one employee, 21-year-old Kevon Ricks, was reported missing and was later found dead. Family members told WRAL News that Ricks had just started working at QVC weeks before the fire.

Investigators said it could take weeks to determine the cause of the fire at the 1.5-million square foot facility.
