While many people scored great deals on a new TV during the holiday season, there is a critical next step.

A TV should be secured at home, especially if young children are around.

"Both of my toddlers go after the TV. They pull on it [and] they yank on it," said parent Alex Flowers.

Flowers said while she stops them, she's also anchored the TV to make sure that it doesn't fall over.

Between 2000 and 2019, 354 people died when a TV tipped over on them, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Nearly all of the people killed were children.

Consumer Reports tech editor, John Wilcox, said people shouldn't think that thinner TVs will eliminate the concern.

“Even though today’s TVs are thin, they can still pose a risk. A 75-inch TV can weigh about 75 pounds,” added Wilcox.

Consumer Reports said people should not put a TV on a dresser. Instead, mount the TV on a wall, or if it's substantial enough, on a media console.

"Just remember that any furniture should also be anchored to the wall,” said Wilcox.

Anchoring kits are available in stores such as Home Depot or Target or online on Amazon.

Consumer Reports also said people should tuck away cords and cables and keep things that kids are drawn to - such as the remote or toys- away from the TV.
