FDA: North Carolina included in romaine lettuce recall

North Carolina is included in a romaine lettuce recall issued by the Food and Drug Administration.

Tanimura & Antle Inc. is voluntarily recalling packaged single head romaine lettuce under the Tanimura & Antle brand due to possible E. Coli contamination.

The products were distributed to unspecified stores in North Carolina, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

Affected packages will contain a single head of romaine lettuce with the UPC number 0-27918-20314-9. Only "packed on" dates between Oct. 15-16 are being recalled.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the recalled product.

Retailers and distributors can identify the potentially affected products through the Produce Traceability Initiative (PTI) sticker attached to exterior of the case. The PTI codes are 571280289SRS1 and 571280290SRS1.

E. coli causes a diarrheal illness often with bloody stools. Most healthy adults recover in a week, but others, especially young children and senior citizens, can develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome. People with severe gastroentestinal symptoms should contact their doctor.
