As we head into a long holiday weekend, here's something that might keep the kids busy: Join the NC State Parks' big trees contest.
During the month of May, participants are encouraged to measure the circumference of big trees around us, identify the tree and record all of the correct information on a "big trees" reporting sheet, which you can find online.

Sean Higgins, chief of interpretation and education for the state parks system, started the contest with 15 cub scouts.
"I knew I should open it throughout the state once I saw how quick they started measuring trees (within minutes of my challenge to them)," Higgins tells me. "It works well for family fun or school from home."

Contestants who submit their reporting sheet by June 5, 2020 could win prizes. More information is on the contest page.
