2 arrested in Durham convenience store robberies

Two men were arrested in connection with separate armed robberies at convenience stores in Durham over the weekend, police said Monday.

Officers responded to a robbery at the Gazelle convenience store at 1108 W. Chapel Hill St. around 11:30 p.m. Friday.

A man wearing a mask and a hoodie handed the clerk a bag and demanded money. A Durham police sergeant was working off-duty at the store and arrested 51-year-old Michael Conway, of Durham.

Officers took a hammer and a box cutter from him.

Conway was charged with attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and held in the Durham County jail under a $100,000 bond.

On Sunday, officers responded to an armed robbery at the Family Fare at 1815 Hillandale Road.

A man holding a knife pushed an employee and took the cash drawer from the register before fleeing the scene.

An officer and his K9 found 48-year-old Bryant Lamont Boyd, of Chapel Hill, in the 3000 block of Croasdaile Drive and found the cash drawer and a knife.

Boyd was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a counterfeit controlled substance with the intent to sell or deliver. He was held in the Durham County jail under a $150,000 bond.
