Every day, nine people in the United States die in accidents caused by distracted drivers. Now, North Carolina is taking steps to try to reduce that number.

House Bill 144, would be known as the Hands Free NC Act. It outlines unlawful use of a wireless communication device and, under the proposed law, operating a motor vehicle with a cellphone in your hand would be prohibited.

It is expected to be discussed on Wednesday in the house judiciary committee.

Last year, 123 people in North Carolina died in wrecks involving distracted drivers.

The proposed bill also outlines the penalties for violations; including a $100 fine for the first offense, a $150 fine for a second offense, and a $200 fine for a third offense.

If the bill passes, North Carolina be the 17th state with a hands free law.
