School officials: Student brought gun to West Cary Middle School

A student will face disciplinary action after bringing a gun to West Cary Middle School on Tuesday.

According to a letter sent by Principal Mike James to parents, school officials received a tip that the unnamed student was in possession of a gun, and a weapon was quickly found among the student’s belongings.

No threats were made against students or staff, James said.

“We are very grateful to our local law enforcement officials, our WCPSS Security Team and our staff for their swift action in this matter. They work closely with us to ensure the safety of our students every day,” James said in the letter.

School officials are prevented from discussing disciplinary action against individual students, but state law mandates a 356-day suspension for any student found in possession of a gun on a school campus.

Last week, a teen was taken into custody after a gun was found at Jack Britt High School in Fayetteville.

School officials said the gun was found in the teen’s locker and the student, who was not identified because of their age, was charged with possession of a firearm on educational property and communicating threats.

That incident came one day after a 17-year-old student in Cumberland County threatened to shoot everybody on his school bus because he was mad that somebody was sitting in his seat.
