Drenching rain is expected to start the day Friday in coastal areas of the Northeast before retreating out to sea. In the rain’s wake, dry and cool air will prevail from the central Appalachians to northern New England.

Clouds, showers and thunderstorms will linger from coastal Texas to northern Florida, the Carolinas, southeastern Virginia, southern Maryland and southeastern Delaware. While there may be pockets of flash and urban flooding, not enough rain is expected to fall to renew or worsen river flooding in the Carolinas. River levels will remain above flood stage near the Carolina coast because of rain that fell from Hurricane Florence two weeks ago. Warm and humid air is projected to linger in the Southeast, with spotty storms over the Florida Peninsula.

Colder air will continue to move across the north-central states. Patchy rain will fall from the Great Lakes to the central Plains and the northern Rockies. A bit of wet snow may mix in over the high country of Montana and Wyoming.

Most areas from the Ohio Valley and the southern Plains to the Pacific Coast can expect a dry day, with at least partial sunshine. Drenching rain from Hurricane Rosa is expected to reach parts of the Southwest next week.

FOCUS: Northeast Dries Out This Weekend

High pressure is expected to build into the Northeast this weekend, resulting in increasing sunshine, lower humidity and seasonable temperatures. There will also be areas of fog both mornings, especially across inland areas.
