Hot and humid air in the Northeast will be pushed toward the coast Thursday as cooler and less humid conditions advance across the interior. Showers and heavy thunderstorms may occur along the boundary between the hot and cooler air masses. Much of the Carolinas and Georgia can expect sunshine and hot and humid conditions. Showers and storms are expected to develop farther south and west, across Florida and the lower Mississippi and Tennessee valleys. Much of the Upper Midwest can expect a dry, cooler day.
While much of the West will be dry, showers and storms may occur in the northern Rockies. Temperatures will be near average for this time of year. Dry conditions will keep the risk of wildfires high. Monsoon moisture that persisted for much of the summer in the Four Corners has diminished in recent days and should remain low through the end of the week.

FOCUS: Heat Relief for the Northeast
After several days of late-summer heat, temperatures are expected to fall in most of the major cities of the Northeast as winds shift onshore Friday. Outside New England, which will be mainly dry and pleasant, it will remain humid through the weekend.
