Jellyfish warning issued for southeastern NC

Though the sunny skies have many rushing to the beaches, the National Weather Service is warning eager beachgoers of jellyfish stings in southeastern North Carolina.

A beach hazard statement was issued Friday morning by the NWS, saying that an excess of jellyfish has been reported at multiple beaches in the Wilmington area.

The Mayo Clinic suggests those who are stung to rinse the area with vinegar, carefully pluck visible tentacles with fine tweezers and to soak the affected area with hot water. The clinic says to avoid rinsing with seawater or human urine, rubbing with a towel or applying pressure bandages.

This warning was issued to beaches in coastal Pender, New Hanover and Brunswick counties in North Carolina, Horry and Georgetown counties in South Carolina.
