A North Carolina congressional candidate was arrested last month on charges of stalking, according to arrest records.

Japheth Nthautha Matemu is a Libertarian candidate in the 2nd Congressional District, which includes parts of Wake, Johnston, Nash and Wilson counties along with all of Franklin and Harnett counties. The district is currently represented by Republican Congressman George Holding. Democrat Linda Coleman also is in the race.

Arrest records show Mathemu, 45, of 623 Cherry Plum Court in Fuquay-Varina, was charged on July 18 with misdemeanor stalking and cyberstalking.

Holly Springs police said Matemu was using a GPS tracker to collect information on his estranged wife's whereabouts.

Matemu was released on $3,000 bond and is scheduled to make his next court appearance on Aug. 10.
