Flooding will continue in parts of the central Appalachians, and the Southern Atlantic and Middle Atlantic coasts on Wednesday. Flooding may affect urban and poor-drainage areas, small streams and unprotected locations along some major rivers. Heavy rain and flooding will expand northeast to the upper Mid-Atlantic Coast and much of New England later in the day into Wednesday night.

Most areas from the central Great Lakes to the lower Mississippi Valley can expect dry weather and sun. Conditions will range from comfortable over the north to steamy across the south-central states.

Showers and strong thunderstorms are forecast to extend from the Upper Midwest to the central Plains. This area marks the leading edge of cooler air that will settle over the northern Plains. A small number of storms may bring hail, gusts and flash flooding.

The West can expect another day of searing heat and blazing sunshine. Ongoing dry conditions west of the Rockies will mean the elevated risk of wildfires. There is no relief over the weekend from the extreme temperatures. Drenching storms are forecast over the Rockies with pockets of flash flooding.

FOCUS: Heat to Persist In the West

A large area of high pressure over the Southwest states will continue to bring intense heat and dry weather to much of the West. Away from the coast, temperatures will soar into the 100s, even in portions of the interior Northwest. This heat wave will last through this weekend.
